<p>The Wheeler School, a co-ed. N-12 independent day school of approximately 800 students in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, RI, is seeking a Counselor and Health/Wellness Educator. This is a 10-month position with the opportunity to extend. The successful candidate will have experience with school-based counseling with children and adolescents and can demonstrate skillfulness in working successfully with teams of other professionals. Comprised of three pediatric nurse specialists, two child and adolescent counselors, and an athletic trainer, our talented staff seek a skilled counselor to help us continue to provide quality care, expand health education and the promotion of a prevention and wellness model.</p><p><br></p><p>We are proud to have received a “First Team” ranking and a “Safe Sports School' award from the National Athletics Trainers Association which symbolizes our school’s commitment to providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment. Drawing on our staff’s connections to an extraordinary array of health agencies, resources, and practitioners in Providence, the school offers candidates the opportunity to provide physical and behavioral health care in a vibrant community setting.</p><p><br></p><p>The mental health counselor and educator will provide culturally responsive behavioral health care and will collaborate with the team to teach SEL/Health to students in Nursery through grade twelve. They will work collaboratively with families, teachers, academic support, the Equity, Community and Belonging office, and Division Heads to support the social-emotional, health, and educational needs of the community.</p><p><br></p><p>Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities</p><p><br></p><p>- Provide short-term solution-focused counseling, case management, and crisis intervention.</p><p><br></p><p>- Assist in curriculum development, planning, and direct teaching of divisional and schoolwide health and wellness lessons and SEL programs.</p><p><br></p><p>- Engage with external community providers to build a robust speaker resource for the WHeels program and upper school community meetings?</p><p><br></p><p>- Collaborate with teachers and advisors to support behavioral regulation and coping strategies.</p><p><br></p><p>- Advise or co-advise the Mental Health Club and upper school senior projects</p><p><br></p><p>- Provide referrals and coordinating treatment with external providers.</p><p><br></p><p>- Manage the flow of students and adults through the health center, triaging as scheduled.</p><p><br></p><p>- Provide culturally responsive care to students and adults, with an understanding of how social identities impact one’s experience, attitudes, and beliefs.</p><p><br></p><p>- Participate in multi-disciplinary student-support teams.</p><p><br></p><p>- Communicate and coordinate with the Health & Wellness team, Deans, Division Heads, Student support teams, and other administrators to coordinate support for students with social, emotional, and mental health needs.</p><p><br></p><p>- Complete clinical documentation in the individual student or adult school health records.</p><p><br></p><p>- Join health and/or related committees to support efforts to improve student health outcomes.</p><p><br></p><p>Qualifications</p><p><br></p><p>- Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or School Psychology; licensure required</p><p><br></p><p>- A minimum of 3-5 years of counseling with substantial experience in an upper school setting, with strong experience in the student support area. In addition, experience with children from early childhood through young adults in a school setting</p><p><br></p><p>- Experience working in a diverse and culturally responsive school and commitment to trauma-informed practices</p><p><br></p><p>- Understanding of social-emotional development from early childhood through young adults in a school setting</p><p><br></p><p>- Experience understanding Health and SEL frameworks and curricula, and teaching in the classroom</p><p><br></p><p>- Experience with a variety of classroom accommodations and multi-age learning environments</p><p><br></p><p>- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance understanding, inclusivity, and community</p><p><br></p><p>- Exceptional integrity and abilities to maintain confidentiality and establish clear boundaries Understanding of student safety laws and best practices</p><p><br></p><p>Physical Demands and Work Environment</p><p><br></p><p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that are essential functions of this position.
