About the position

At the State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - South Region, we are recruiting for a part-time 1st shift job opportunity for a Developmental Services (DS) Self Advocate Coordinator in the Health Services Division based in Norwich. In this role, the Self Advocacy Coordinator serves as a key leader in supporting initiatives that improve supports to DDS constituents. They promote and support initiatives that lead to ensuring that the rights of individuals supported by the department are respected. The self advocate coordinators provide training in numerous areas that impact the health and safety of individuals including training on healthy relationships, human rights, speaking up for oneself, effectively hiring and managing direct hire support to meet their health and safety needs. They are leaders in implementing the DDS Employment Initiative as well as Assistive Technology. They provide training and education to individuals that assist them to access waivered services effectively and efficiently. By working with families and individuals to understand the waivers, the Self Advocate Coordinators encourage them to utilize their waiver allocations more cost effectively to meet their individual needs. They support individuals to have a voice and advocate for themselves by leading self-advocacy groups. They provide leadership in self-advocacy for all DDS staff. The schedule will be 20 hours/week and is required to be flexible according to agency needs. It may be required to work nights or weekends. This position is responsible for spreading the department's mission and incorporating the principles into every aspect of the position. Responsibilities
• Provide leadership, mentor, train consumers, families, and staff.

• Support existing and start new self-advocacy groups and create self-determination materials that are written for and by individuals with an intellectual disability.

• Participate on Department of Developmental Services and other statewide committees.

• Encourage individuals to utilize their waiver allocations more cost effectively to meet their individual needs.

• Lead self-advocacy groups and provide training on various topics impacting health and safety.

Requirements
• Must be an individual who is DDS eligible and receives supports from DDS.

• Experience in providing training and education to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as needed.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience in implementing employment initiatives and assistive technology programs.

• Familiarity with waiver services and how to access them effectively.
