Job Title: DPW Laborer

Position Summary
The Town of Bellingham seeks a motivated DPW Laborer to join its Department of Public Works. This position is responsible for performing manual construction labor, pipefitting, and operating various trucks and equipment on town infrastructure projects. The Laborer may also support DPW Mechanics, Facilities Operators, and other teams as assigned.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Installation, replacement, reading, and repair of water mains, meters, and service lines
• Tree and brush removal, cutting, and chipping on roads and public land
• Earth moving, grading, road construction, and improvement projects
• Snow removal and application of ice control chemicals and sand
• Cleaning, installation, and repair of drain and sewer pipes and structures
• Painting and carpentry at DPW facilities, sidewalks, and streets
• Manual and power sweeping of public areas and DPW locations
• Cemetery services: grave excavation and backfill, niche interments, marker installation
• Landscaping tasks include mowing, planting, and weed removal
• Performing additional related duties on both public and designated private property
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to perform physically demanding labor and use standard tools
• Ability to read work orders and record task completion
Required Licenses (upon hire or within probationary period):
• * Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class B
• Air Brake Endorsement
• Tanker Endorsement
Preferred Qualifications
• CDL A – Eligible for additional stipend
• Experience in public works, especially related to roads, water, sewer, and drainage systems
Physical Requirements
• Lift up to 100 lbs. to waist height and hold for 10 seconds
• Lift 20 lbs. over shoulder height and hold for 10 seconds
• Use laborer tools such as shovels, bars, picks, brooms, jackhammers, etc.
• Climb ladders, enter vehicle cabs, and walk on uneven terrain
Compensation
• Wages, holidays, and vacation time per AFSCME contract Probationary Pay Structure (based on licensure):
• 97% of full rate if hired without required licenses
• +3% for obtaining a CDL with required endorsements

• Subject to Bellingham’s Drug & Alcohol Testing Policy
All candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening as a condition of employment. In accordance with federal and municipal safety regulations, ongoing random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing may also be conducted for employees operating CDL-classified vehicles or performing safety-sensitive duties.
