Location: Onsite, Hybrid, or Fully Remote (within 90 minutes of any branch location in Ingham, Jackson, Washtenaw, or Wayne Counties)

Reports To: Director of Real Estate Lending

Travel: Less than 5%

Status: Full-Time | Non-Exempt

Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Mortgage Underwriter/Closer to join our Real Estate Lending team. In this role, you'll analyze mortgage loan files for compliance, prepare closing packages, and support the mortgage process from application to funding. You'll work closely with loan originators, processors, and third-party vendors to ensure a smooth and compliant lending experience.

As a Mortgage Underwriter/Closer, you'll ensure every mortgage loan is handled with accuracy, integrity, and a member-first mindset-from detailed underwriting analysis to preparing closing packages with care and precision.

What You'll Do
• Analyze mortgage applications (Conventional, FHA, VA) for accuracy and compliance with internal, agency, and investor guidelines.
• Evaluate Loan to Value (LTV), Debt to Income (DTI), credit reports, tax returns, income, assets, and documentation to make informed underwriting decisions.
• Ensure loan quality, review appraisals, and clear conditions.
• Verify and update data on mortgage origination systems.
• Collaborate with loan originators, third-party vendors, and members to ensure timely and accurate closings.
• Prepare and review closing documents, wire transfers, and funding details.
• Support post-closing activities, loan transfers, and servicing processes.
• Respond to audit findings and ensure compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
• Stay current on mortgage regulations and secondary market requirements.
• Serve as a knowledgeable resource and back-up support for processors and servicers as needed.

Your Experience Includes
• A high school diploma or GED (college coursework or degree preferred).
• At least 3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and mortgage origination systems.
• Experience reviewing appraisals, tax returns, and mortgage documentation.
• Familiarity with investor and secondary market processes.
• Ability to register with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS).

Expected Starting Range

$25.38 – $32.24 based in experience
