About the position

The Computational & Data Science Research Specialist 3 position at the University of California San Diego is centered on the design, development, modification, and evaluation of complex high-performance computing (HPC), computational science, and data science software systems. The successful candidate will engage in both existing and new software, hardware, and algorithms, undertaking tasks such as debugging, performance testing, and optimization. This role requires collaboration with domain scientists to adapt computational models to emerging technologies and paradigms, ensuring the accuracy of results and contributing to the development of integrated modeling frameworks. Additionally, the specialist will be responsible for assembling, configuring, and maintaining scientific models in fields such as computational physics and engineering. In this role, the candidate will also participate in research and development activities, contributing to proposals and establishing collaborations with researchers from related fields. Responsibilities include benchmarking and analyzing HPC systems and algorithms, creating and maintaining technical documentation, and presenting findings at conferences and in publications. The position may involve leading projects of moderate scope, interacting with internal stakeholders, and supporting Department of Energy Fusion Energy Science (DOE FES) initiatives. The specialist will negotiate project plans, train others on software usage, and ensure compliance with community standards and department policies. This position may offer a flexible work arrangement, which could include a non-standard work schedule and/or the ability to work off-site part of the time. The employee is expected to be available full-time during assigned work hours, which will be discussed with the supervisor. Remote work is also an option, requiring a remote work agreement, and can be performed from anywhere in the United States.
