Job Overview

We are seeking a visionary and highly disciplined Editor-in-Chief / Writing Department Director to oversee our entire writing team and direct the editorial execution of GK News’ mission. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for maintaining the integrity, quality, and operational efficiency of all written content across platforms.

The person in this role will supervise writers, editors, and researchers—ensuring that all published work meets GK News’ rigorous standards for clarity, neutrality, and insight. You will also work closely with the executive board to align editorial strategy with the broader goals of the organization. This position is ideal for someone who is not only a masterful editor and team leader but also deeply invested in shaping the future of public-interest journalism.

Responsibilities
• Lead the writing department, including staff writers, editors, fact-checkers, and researchers.
• Oversee all editorial output across newsletters, web content, columns, and special features.
• Ensure consistency with GK News’ editorial framework, voice, and objectivity standards.
• Collaborate with the Strategic News Coordinator and Executive Editor to define coverage priorities and manage story selection.
• Set workflows, editorial calendars, and deadlines to ensure efficient, high-quality production.
• Review and approve final drafts of major stories, providing substantive feedback when necessary.
• Mentor and support writers in developing their craft and aligning with the company’s editorial values.
• Coordinate directly with the executive board to report on department performance, surface challenges, and propose strategic improvements.
• Support cross-functional collaboration between editorial, research, product, and audience development teams.
• Maintain a high editorial bar while fostering a culture of accountability, curiosity, and purpose

Qualifications
• Senior-level editorial experience, preferably in digital media, policy journalism, or research-based publications recommended.
• Proven leadership skills with experience managing writers and editorial teams.
• Deep understanding of journalistic ethics, sourcing, and narrative framing.
• Excellent editing skills, with a sharp eye for clarity, balance, and structure.
• Strong organizational and strategic thinking abilities; able to manage both day-to-day editorial flow and long-term vision.
• Experience working with or reporting to executive leadership is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with managing content workflows in remote or hybrid teams.
• Deep commitment to editorial independence, truth-seeking, and reader trust.
