Immediate Start
READ718 offers individualized reading instruction and mentorship to low-income students in Brooklyn who need it. How the program works - A student is referred to READ 718 by a teacher or school administrator. - The student and parent/guardian agree to have the student participate in tutoring sessions at READ 718 twice per week for 1.5 hours for a minimum of 10 weeks. - The student’s literacy skills are assessed by a certified reading specialist and an instructional plan is created. Contact with the student’s teacher is made to get any relevant information about the student’s literacy needs. - The student is matched with a dedicated, trained volunteer who will work on the identified areas of weakness, as well as engage in reading for pleasure with the student. - After 10 weeks, the student’s literacy skills will again be assessed to evaluate progress and determine if ongoing instruction is necessary.

READ 718 is looking for volunteer literacy tutors for our Remote After School Program during our Fall Cycle (September 22 - December 11). Volunteers must attend an orientation session and one training session, both on the virtual conferencing app Zoom. They must also undergo a background check.
READ 718 is a non-profit literacy center that provides tutoring and literacy workshops to low-income students in grades 3-8. We are looking for dedicated, reliable, caring, positive people who are committed to working with a child virtually twice a week for 10 weeks (September 22 - December 11) via Zoom, excluding national holidays. Tutors will be provided with easy-to-follow lesson plans for each session, and will have access to reading specialists and literacy educators for questions and guidance.
Children who are behind in reading after grade 3 and do not receive the targeted instruction that they need simply fall further and further behind. This issue has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. READ 718 aims to provide students with high-quality, supplementary instruction to bridge the gap between students who are struggling and their grade-level peers.
