POSITION SUMMARY: The Transportation Supervisor oversees the logistics and operations of delivery in compliance with DOT regulations. The Supervisor is responsible for driver safety, scheduling driver assignments, managing transportation and maintenance budgets, documenting all transportation activities and ensuring all vehicles are in proper working order.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Transportation Supervisor will be expected to consistently deliver top outcomes for the following areas:
- Create and maintain a safe work environment and culture for the department.
- Enforce safety and sanitation regulations, participate in accident/injury investigations within the department, and work directly with injured department employees on First Reports of Injury and seeking medical attention.
- Direct and coordinate the activities of employees engaged in the Transportation Department. Plan, establish and communicate schedules and routes, assignments, shipping sequences, and third party freight pickup and deliveries to meet customer requests.
- Create and update department SOPs, Standards of Work, and other department specific documents to aid in training of staff, and to comply with all transportation standards, tracking, and safety regulations.
- Confer with management or subordinates to resolve worker problems, complaints, or grievances.
- Communicate with customers to provide best in class customer service.
- Evaluate employee performance and preparation of performance appraisals.
- Prepare and maintain work records and reports that include information such as miles driven, daily hours on the road, and drops for bi-weekly payroll.
- Target and secure new business for third party freight pickup and deliveries.
- Document calls, deliveries, routes and times for pickups and deliveries. Ensure records are maintained in accordance with DOT regulations.
- Oversee the daily maintenance of vehicles in the fleet, conducting vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness, and assigning vehicle repair and maintenance. Maintain records of vehicle use and maintenance.
- Monitor driver qualifications and training.
- Review and process all trip logs and reports, ensuring completion and accuracy.
- Handle customer complaints and inquiries.
- Analysis of routes to maximize fuel savings.
- Track fuel savings and monitor drivers are fueling at the correct stations and states based on current policy.
- Set policy based on fuel expenses and discounts.
- Work with Warehousing & Transportation Director to set budgets; Monitor and approve driver expenses to ensure budgets are not exceeded.
- Invoice Third Party Freight and internal billing.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- In-depth knowledge of industry-standard methods, costs and best practices for hauling freight.
- Valid Class A CDL with good driving record, and ability to be insurable on company driving policy is preferred.
- Knowledge of trucking regulations and laws is required.
- Understanding of how shipping, trucking and logistics work.
- Strong organization and time management skills required.
- Excellent verbal communication skills to clearly relay information to all involved parties.
- Must have excellent organization skills.
- Leadership and the ability to positively motivate a team of drivers.
- Analytical skills to problem-solve and coordinate difficult situations.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word required.
- Must be able to keyboard for extended periods of time, communicate over telephone for extended periods of time, occasionally lift up to 15 pounds, and inspect trucks including climbing steps, bending and stooping, with or without reasonable accommodation.
